Please join me in congratulating our hometown professional soccer team, FC (Football Club) Dallas, which recently defeated Western Conference rival Seattle FC in a two-game quarterfinal series and advanced to the League Soccer’s championship semifinals.
FC Dallas will play at Portland on Sunday, November 22 and again at Toyota Stadium at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 29 to determine who will advance to the MLS Cup Championship Game on Sunday, December 6.
After losing a 2-1 decision at Seattle on Sunday, November 1 in the opener of the series, Tesho Akindele and Walker Zimmerman scored for FC Dallas in the final 10 minutes of the November 8 match to take a 2-1 lead.
Since MLS playoff victors are determined by their two-game aggregate (and with emphasis placed on visitors’ goal scoring), the 3-3 two-game deadlock required overtime in front of a screaming capacity crowd.
After a nerve-wracking overtime, both teams had to decide the series on penalty kicks. FC Dallas’s Zimmerman sent the capacity throng home in a happy mood after he drilled the deciding attempt into the back of the net.
FC Dallas proudly celebrates its status as one of the 10 charter franchises of the MLS, having played at the iconic Cotton Bowl as the Dallas Burn from 1996-2004. Their best seasons since landing in Frisco included 2006 when they won the Western Conference championship, and the 2010 squad that finished as runners-up to the Colorado Rapids for the MLS Cup title.
