Frisco is proud to be the home of the RoughRiders baseball team, which celebrates its 14th home opener on Thursday, April 14 at 7:05 p.m. against Northwest Arkansas at Dr. Pepper Ballpark. The first 2,000 fans who enter the stadium will receive a free RoughRiders 2016 magnet schedule
The 2016 home inaugural, which follows a season-opening six game road trip, is the first of 70 exciting opportunities through Labor Day to watch professional baseball and enjoy family-style entertainment as Texas League opponents visit Dr. Pepper Ballpark.
The famed Texas League is comprised of the ‘Riders (the Texas Rangers’ Class AA affiliate), Midland Rockhounds (Oakland A’s), Corpus Christi Hooks (Houston Astros), and San Antonio Missions (San Diego Padres) in the South Division, and the Arkansas Travelers (Los Angeles Angels), Northwest Arkansas Naturals (World Champion Kansas City Royals), Tulsa Drillers (Los Angeles Dodgers), and Springfield Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) in the North Division. The teams battle for first and second half division first place honors, culminating in a two-round post-season playoff.
Players are sometimes called up directly from Class AA ball to the major leagues. The RoughRiders have sent more than 130 players to the Major Leagues, including All-Stars Chris Davis, Elvis Andrus, Adrian Gonzalez and Ian Kinsler.
The excitement spills over into the stands, where fans will also be entertained by colorful performers who sing, dance and host hilarious on-field contests between innings.
Children ages 5-12 will enjoy the McAfee Playground, which is available through the end of the 7th inning. Safely tucked beyond the ‘Riders’ bullpen down the leftfield line, the playground features a three story red and black Mega Tower and bounce houses.
Single game tickets with refreshments included, partial season ticket packages, J.C. Penney Club dining, and group and luxury suites can be reserved by calling (972) 731-9200 or emailing the team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Choctaw Lazy River, scheduled for completion in June beyond the rightfield fence, is another exciting addition to the ballpark. The attraction is shaped like a flattened figure eight. Just three feet deep, its gentle current will carry swimmers about 400 feet.
The Choctaw Lazy River may be the largest pool in a professional sports stadium, dwarfing the Arizona Diamondbacks’ very popular pool at Chase Field.
In addition to private events, the Choctaw Lazy River will be available to the public during six Thursday home games. “Thursday Night Pool Party” tickets can be purchased, and will provide live pre-game music and all-you-can-eat hot dogs, bratwursts, chips, peanuts, and Dr. Pepper products for 2.5 hours.
The RoughRiders began play in 2003 and have finished first among all Double-A franchises in attendance in each of the last 11 seasons (2005-2015). There have been numerous major franchise improvements, including a new team identity, and massive additions and upgrades to Dr. Pepper Ballpark that include a giant new video board, sound system, sports bar, team store, improved food service and menu, and a complete overhaul of in-game entertainment.
The improvements earned the Riders and the City of Frisco “Best Ballpark Renovation” of 2015 by Ballpark Digest in the under $6 million category.
